How we test, compare and decide
Every PickKoala guide follows the same four-stage method. It is built for honesty about what we can and cannot verify — because that is the only kind of product advice worth reading.

Stage 1 — Define the real question
We start with a reader problem, not a product category. “Which earbuds fit small ears without falling out” is a question. “Best earbuds” is a keyword. Every guide is scoped around a use case, a budget band or a tradeoff a shopper actually faces, which is why you will see scenario labels instead of a single overall winner.
Stage 2 — Gather the primary evidence
For each candidate we collect, and keep on file:
- Official specification sheets and product manuals
- Manufacturer warranty length, repair terms and spare-part availability
- Return windows and restocking-fee policies at the retailers we link to
- Safety, energy or material certifications where they are relevant to the category
- Verified owner reports — long-run usage notes, durability patterns and recurring failure modes
Where a claim cannot be traced to one of those sources, it does not go in the guide.
Stage 3 — Compare on the things that age well
Launch-week features are the worst predictor of whether you will still be happy in three years. So we weight durability, repairability, warranty coverage and long-term availability above novelty. Concretely:
- Materials and construction — fabric weights, stitching, coatings, replaceable parts
- Warranty and support — how long, how easy to claim, how fast
- Ownership cost — consumables, filters, accessories, subscriptions
- Fit and sizing consistency — whether the published chart matches reality
Stage 4 — Write it plainly, then re-check it
Each guide states the verdict, who should skip it and the specific tradeoff involved. Guides carry a last-checked date, and we revisit them when a product is discontinued, a successor launches, or reader feedback shows a recommendation has stopped holding up.
What we are honest about
We do not run our own laboratory. Unless a guide explicitly says otherwise, our recommendations are based on published specifications and aggregated owner evidence — not on our own controlled physical testing. We tell you this up front because a review site that implies lab testing it never performed is already lying to you about something.
We also do not publish numeric star ratings. A single number hides the tradeoffs that matter most, such as “excellent sound, unusable in a call” or “best fit, worst battery.” Instead we give a verdict, a best-use case and an explicit downside.
Where the money comes from
Affiliate commissions. No brand pays for placement, review copies do not buy a ranking, and no advertiser sees a draft before you do. Our affiliate disclosure spells out exactly how links earn money and which programmes we participate in.
